One of my favorite past times, when I have time to pass, is to read a good book. These days, reading allows me to escape for just a bit of time and focus on learning something new to enrich my life. A few months back, I managed to come across the cover of Cara Alwill Leyba’s book Girl Code: Unlocking the Secrets to Success, Sanity, and Happiness for the Female Entrepreneur. It’s a mouthful to say, but I thought “Hey! It’ll be a nice feel-good book for those trying to break into business.” After reading it, I left with was something so much more than another book on my Kindle app.

Most of last year I found myself feeling like I could never get my reigns under me. I saw all these women around me doing great things, getting big endorsements, getting awards, getting…it! They were just doing their thing and I was slowly feeling stuck not knowing where to begin. I was feeling like my time wasn’t coming. I wasn’t sure about my ideas. I wasn’t confident in the goals I had set because, frankly I wasn’t doing anything to reach them. I found myself stagnant and in a rut.

Enter Girl Code.

“You should also know that whatever your gift is, nobody can do it quite like you. One of the biggest traps we fall into as women is the comparison trap, the “she’s got it all” trap, the “she has more fans” trap, or the “she’s making more money” trap. We tend to stack ourselves up against everyone else and pick ourselves apart based on what other people are doing. This practice does nothing to make us better.”

Yes Cara!!!! Read me, boo!

“We each have a unique path to walk in this life, and there is a reason that yours is unfolding the way that it is. Embrace your journey and look for the lessons. Believe in divine timing and know that what’s for you will not pass you.”

What I love about Cara is the fact that she is a gutsy girl and she’s just like you & me. She keeps it real, raw, and she goes there when she needs to. This book sparked something within me that hasn’t been sparked in a long time. It not only outlined the traps we set up for ourselves, but how we sabotage ourselves from being the best and fiercest women we could ever be. Trusting your gut and trusting your own brilliance is some of the things she talks about. She also talks about not being afraid of putting yourself out there, but also not being afraid of saying “Hey girl! I see you over there doing your thing.”

Ever see a girl on social media doing her thing, but you refuse to “like” her post or photo and you know you want to? Why not support her in her moment? Why see her as competition? Don’t be afraid to inspire with what you have going on, but don’t be afraid to empower your fellow sister over there too!

“You know a woman is strong, beautiful, and secure by the way she empowers and inspires others.”

If you’re looking for some reading that will actually make you think and give you a swift kick in the butt {with a Louboutin heel}, please check out Cara’s book. You can read a sample and buy it here.

There’s no time for bullsh*t when you’re building an empire. -Cara Alwill Leyba
