A couple weeks ago I had a reader send me this question:
I know this is off the topic of fashion, but would you ever consider doing a brief workout post? I seriously covet your legs! 🙂 -Samantha
First off, thanks Samantha for the compliment. That’s very sweet of you. I’ve been pondering over how I was going to answer your question so it resonates and will be effective. As for doing a post, I’m definitely considering it. However I will tell you exactly what I do (or don’t do) to get my legs in shape.
-My legs are one of my best features (not bragging; just sayin’), but I’ve never been one to focus on working them out. I’ve always been athletic, so I didn’t exercise in a gym setting to stay fit. I was always on the go and active, so that was a plus.
Middle School/High School
-I was a cheerleader for 10 years. Five of those years consisted of me being the base or back spot for girls, so throwing someone or catching someone is all leg power. Add in the jumps (forget tumbling – I can’t tumble to save my life) and that counted as my workout.
College
-I will tell anyone that I rarely worked out in college. Between being a Business major and serving as a Female Modeling trainer, I didn’t make the time. However all I wore were heels in college. At FAMU, or “The Hill” as we call it, there are enough hills for you to walk and climb, so whenever I was on campus wearing heels, I was already giving my legs the workout it needed.
Walking on the runway is an entirely different walk than walking with your girlfriends in the mall or going to buy bread at the market. It’s all leg power. So 3 nights a week I trained girls how to walk, which ultimately allowed my legs to stay toned and fit.
Life Today
-While I will still tear down anyone’s runway from time to time, I’ve come to the point where I have to workout in order to maintain. To be honest – I hate working out, but I do it. I work with a weight trainer in Atlanta, as well as take Spin classes. For leg exercises, the most I’ll do is use a 20 lb. weight and do squats or a wall sit.
Overall, the lifestyle I’ve had and my Mom’s genes really is the secret behind it all. However, I may consider showing you a few exercises my trainer does to help you.
