As of late, I’ve been super analytical about the dreams within us & the steps we take (or don’t take) to make that dream come true. In high school and college, I declared wanting to do all sorts of things in my life, so naturally I took on the activities I thought would get me there. I would call my plan to get there “strategic”, but I just did things as they came along. To be blunt, I never really sat down to pinpoint exactly what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. I had an idea, but forget about asking me to interpret that!
As a young adult in her early to mid-twenties, I had aspirations, but who wanted to hear about those? Aspirations didn’t get the bills paid or the food on the table. So like most adults, I politely aspired myself to finish college and get a j.o.b. and put those ideas on hold. I would figure it out later. Sound familiar?
Along the way I always kept an ear open in case someone had a word to share about my dreams. I couldn’t formulate exactly what I wanted or where I was headed. I figured everyone else got lucky or they were at the right place at the right time. Better yet, they knew someone on the inside to get the deal. Yep, for years I convinced myself of this notion. In the meantime, I would still participate in as many activities as possible, in hopes that someone would either see my talent or could impart some words of wisdom to help me figure it out.
Fast forward to now.
Like so many in the world, we tend to look everywhere else instead of looking inside ourselves. No one on earth knows you like yourself, so why should I expect someone to give me the drive I already have within my own God-given strength? Once I realized that, I stopped doing activities for the sake of saying I was doing something. Activity doesn’t always mean productivity. Without a clear vision, you can’t map out the future. I took a few months to map out that vision on paper. What I gathered was all the things I’ve loved starting from 3 to 26 years old – fashion, modeling, beauty, journaling, & social networking) and created exactly what you see today – this website.
When I realized how to make this dream something tangible, the negative thoughts began. “Who do you think you are? You don’t know as much as this blogger or this blogger.”, “Honey, no one is going to read what you have to say. LOL are you joking?”, “You are definitely a private person. Why would you want to put yourself out there?”, “What if it doesn’t do well?” After all that, I thought, “…but what if it does???”
After that, I pushed all negative thoughts aside, focused on the goal, took a deep breath, and jumped in, head first. Over a year and a half later, I can honestly say I’m glad I didn’t give in, nor give up on something I wanted to do. And no, this space is not my only dream in life, as I have many, but it was definitely a great foundation of a learning lesson: never give up on your dreams. Never let anyone stop you…not even you.
Can you honestly say you’re fulfilling every dream you’ve dared to dream? What’s stopping you? Is it the fear of failing or success? Look within yourself and be relentless on getting the answer. You’re the only one who can answer this for yourself. I’ll leave you with one of my favorite quotes by one of my favorite dreamers:
Take the first step in faith; you don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.
~Dr. Martin L. King Jr.
Dare to dream.
