Before you think I’m crazy and start picketing or rioting on the city limits of Atlanta, like Kevin Hart, let me explain. My mom and I were having a conversation on Labor Day about fashion and she’s a firm believer that you don’t wear one stitch of white after the holiday. So of course, I’m going into my philosophy about it and telling her that that’s not (entirely) true, that you can wear white; there’s just a few things to moderate to make it fit for fall.
Timing
I’m well aware school is back in and everyone is screaming about the fall, but let’s be clear: it’s still officially summer. Let’s take that a step further: just because a new season begins, does not mean that’s when the cooler weather does. While I do think it’s appropriate to start packing away those linen culottes you bought on sale, it’s still acceptable to wear your white blouse or blazer. Dress for the weather, but also remember the season is transitioning.
Am I supposed to suffer in 100% humidity because of a rule that was created by a few snobby women in the 1800’s?
Sidebar: These rules should also be applied to those over-zealous individuals that want to wear their colored tights and peacoats right now (I’ve witnessed it). #blankstare It’s too hot for those pieces. There’s nothing wrong with being fashion forward, but don’t be a fashion fool.

Material Girl
If you decide to wear white, remember that there is a difference between wearing white linen slacks and white wool slacks. Material here is key! You can opt to wear an ivory or even a winter white suit. The point here is to make sure it’s materials are developed for cooler temperatures outside.
Beware of buying pieces now that are 70% off in white. Stores are eager to get rid of summer apparel to stock the shelves with fall wear. The white you’ll see on sale was created for the summer.

50 Shades of White
Regardless if you fancy snow white, winter white, ivory, ecru, or cream, everything is all in how you wear it and the material it’s made out of. Items such as linen and acrylic, which are made for warmer weather, won’t fly. It’s not necessarily the color…understand your fabrics.
White Accessories & Shoes
This is where your colors will be important. Skip the white and opt for fall colors as accents, browns, nudes, and even black for shoes and accessories.
Above all else, the main thing to wear is confidence!
