A few weeks ago, I made a quick little shopping trip to H&M to pick up a few goodies for Spring.

I picked a number of treasures, especially neons. When it was time to pay the cashier, he mentioned he wasn’t a big fan of the trend because people tend to overkill on neons where they look clownish. Before you know it, I found myself explaining to him some things you can do to tone it down without giving up your flash of color. Here is what I shared with him. Today’s visual comes from Kate Spade New York‘s Spring 2013 RTW collection. #sochic

“Pair neons with a neutral shoe color like nude or even black.”

This advice works well when you’re wearing multiple neon colors at once.

“Pair neons with a pattern. For a chic look that’s in season, go for black and white.”

Black and white with a pop of color, especially neon, is so chic right now.

“If you want your shoes to pop as well, pair one piece of your outfit with a neutral to balance it out.”

Remember: neutrals can include white, black, khaki, and navy.

“If you’re going to go all out, ensure that you wear neons that have complimentary colors in the ensemble.”

What’s great about this look is that the yellow shoes brings out the yellow flowers in her skirt. The eyeshadow is heavy, but she pairs it with an understated, nude lip.
